World Tourism Day
World Tourism Day is celebrated every year on 27 September and was officially established in 1980 by the UN World Tourism Organization (now UN Tourism).
The date marks the anniversary of the adoption of the UNWTO Statutes in 1970, a milestone in the development of modern international tourism.
Main Purpose
The day aims to raise awareness of tourism’s role in economic growth, inclusive development, and environmental sustainability at a global level.
It also showcases how tourism shapes social, cultural, political, and economic values, not just in major destinations but in communities of all sizes.
Why It Matters
Tourism is a major creator of jobs and income, particularly for regions that rely on visitors and the visitor economy.
It supports cultural exchange and understanding by encouraging people to experience and appreciate different places, stories, and ways of life.
How It Is Marked
Each year focuses on a specific theme, such as sustainability, peace, or green investment, and includes a designated host country for global celebrations.
Destinations, tourism boards, and businesses often mark the day with events, campaigns, and initiatives that promote responsible and sustainable tourism
