Crewe Town Council announces its support for Crewe’s UK Town of Culture competition application

Following on from the recent announcement of a UK Town of Culture competition by the Department for Culture, Media & Sport, a united Crewe will submit an application to the process, incorporating input from multiple key stakeholder organisations across the town.

The UK Town of Culture competition will see several towns competing to win the title with the winning town delivering a year-long programme of cultural events, activities, and projects designed to inspire creativity, celebrate diversity, and strengthen community connections.

This new competition will sit alongside the existing UK City of Culture programme, which has seen significant lasting impacts across the winning cities of Derry/Londonderry, Hull, Coventry and Bradford.

We invite residents, businesses, and partners to join us on this journey and help shape Crewe’s cultural future.

The Leader of Crewe Town Council, Councillor Jill Rhodes, commented:

"Crewe is a town with a proud past and an exciting future. We are committed to putting culture at the heart of our community, as our application for Town of Culture status clearly demonstrates, and this process will create exciting opportunities for residents and visitors alike.”

The Chair of the Events and Culture Committee, Councillor Martin Edwards, stated:

"Crewe is a vibrant and diverse town that has grown from its roots as a unique railway colony that brought people together from all over the UK and sent trains around the world. As the ‘Voice For Crewe’, we look forward to showcasing the cultural stories of our residents and celebrating our diverse community on a national platform."
